The MAD-galoreans!!
Posted by Janice in Volunteer Files... on March 17th, 2010
It’s only natural that a team which comprises mostly of Psychology students would see MADness everywhere. So, here are the different kinds of madness as observed among the core team members.
Name: Deepak Bhat K
Mental Disorder: Extreme Introversion
We take him as Oogway, the wise old turtle in Kung Fu Panda. He comes out of his shell, talks and goes back in. Very sensible, I must say.
Designation: Our very own President.
Name: Achala Prabhu
Mental Disorder: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
I did not realize this till I saw how organized her files, her room, her bathroom, her wardrobe (clothes compiled by preference), MAD’s old newbie list which is checked almost every week. She constantly has to organize things, re-arrange plates, and tidy the table. Yeah, you get it. Also, what freaked me out was her hard drive; the music file has folders for male artists and female artists, then solo and group folders. She would put Monica of Friends to shame.
Designation: VP Human Resources.
Name: Nikita Kadri
Mental Disorder: Multiple Personality Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder AND Hypo Mania.
Brace yourself for this. Kadri has ADHD but since she also has Multiple Personality Disorder so the Alter ego ‘Lanka Lakshmi’ has Hypomania. Lanka is a rapid talker, has a flight of ideas and has decreased sleep. For the fleeting ideas, she once had a suggestion for the Mad App birthday policy when on someone’s birthday, from the left of the page these caricatures (with hands + feet by the way) that is a bunting, a trumpet, a candle, a cake, two more candles and another trumpet. They come in ‘holding hands’ and encircle the name and the date, walk around it once. And then there’s a small burst of ‘celebration’ wherein the candles ‘jump’ on the cake, the buntings fly and the trumpets blow and Happy Birthday is screamed on the page. And then the candle, cake, trumpets and whatever came in hold hands and walk out from the right. Remember Vidya Balan in Bhool Bhooliyan?
Designation: VP Operations.
Name: Samiksha Shetty
Mental Disorder: Bi-polar
She has extremes of all moods. When she’s happy, she’s happppyyyyy. When she’s angry, God save the world. Take your work seriously, and make her happy, and you might even get treated to one of her famous double-cheese omelettes. Has a hit list, people she would like to kill. She also has numerous techniques of killing people which she has voiced on different occasions when the work is not done. Sometimes, I feel maybe the silence of lambs inspired her a little too much.
Designation: VP English Project head.
Name: Divya Abraham
Mental Disorder: Early onset of Alzheimer’s
She in recent times has the ability to forget anything and everything. Her watch, her record books, her wallet, her phone, her mind, everything. There was a time when she forgot she had given her clothes to the laundry (and this was 6 months ago) and now she did not remember which laundry. We are now teaching her how to say “Water”. But she has a knack with numbers and is excellent with math, also can very diplomatically make anyone shell out money. Fund raising in good hands eh?
Designation: VP Corporate Relations.
Name: Greeshma Rai
Mental Disorder: Hysteria
Keeps talking till her target idea is in effect. Very responsible. That’s all. Freud would be proud of her.
Designation: VP Placements.
Name: Jennifer D’souza
Mental Disorder: Manic Depression
You won’t hear her talk for hours and you assume she’s the quite type, Ya right! Get some lemon ice cream or a lime and hear the ‘real’ Jen roll! The “Let it roll, baby roll,” part of Roadhouse Blues was written for HER.
Designation: VP Finance.
Name: Shiva Prakash Acharya
Mental Disorder: Delusional Disorder
Seldom talks but when he talks, it makes sense. We assume the rest of the time, there’s this film roll in his mind that shows him movies and things. Maybe effects of his graveyard shifts in the office. But how we all wish we were in ‘Shiv-lala-land’.
Designation: F.O.M Coordinator
Name: Janice D’souza
Mental Disorder: Traces of Paranoia, ‘Worrier’ and Schizophrenia
She is what people call a chronic worrier and doubts everything and everyone around her. Worries about her cuticles, hair, weight, world peace, how to solve world hunger problem and also her going-to-be-god-knows-where-the-hell-is-he-husband. Makes a zillion people read and re-read the entry before it is published, and most of it doesn’t even make it online.
Designation: VP Public Relations.
What we look like when we’re not suffering from disorders.
Pallu Snehabhavan Camp!!!
Posted by shaakir in Camps, Volunteer Files... on March 1st, 2010
Hey all maddies!!The camp was total fun..everyone enjoyed it to the core…It was held at palluruthy snehabhavan on 27th and 28th of Feb.We had planned lots of unending fun filled sessions for the kids….
Day 1:
35 out of 64 kids accompanied by 6 volunteers were taken to Naval Base, Kochi to enjoy 4 hours of commando exercises.All had so much fun crawling through tyres,climbing ropes.They also had a tour of diving institute,the museum,training and equipment room.
After lunch the kids had a motivation and stress buster session by Mr N.R Menon.It was truly an inspiring and motivating session about dealing exams with no fear…the kids interacted well with him and asked their doubts regarding exam fear.
By 4.00 pm the snehabhavan team got dressed up in their jerseys for a football match with the team from S.H Thevara.We also had Mr K.Raveendran the coach of the Thevara team explaining all the rules and ethics of football.
Mr K.Raveendran explaining the rules of the game
Frankly speaking the match was the second best thing that happened in the camp.They did’nt look like amateurs at all,all looked like pros.They did bent the ball like Beckham!!What a match!!!
pallu kids were 3 down at half time..they came back strong to level the score 4-4 in the end.
Yayee!!!Campfire!!!this was the next best thing at the camp .It was non-stop masti with the kids dancing to Tamil songs..We somehow managed to the keep wood burning till the end and learned how not to light a campfire..(thanks to the Jonva and Paul for their fire fighting skills)
Day 2:
All the kids were excited..They wore their new MAD T-shirts..all were thrilled to see Cine actresses Jyothirmayi and Samvratha Sunil who interacted with the kids.The kids also presented amazing dance performances,and also played Antakshari with them…all the kids had a wonderful time with them.
Next we had a dance session by an NGO called Sanchaara.They spent quality time with the kids and taught them dance movements..which helped them understand their talents
in them.The kids never got bored they danced with full ease… better than us.
After lunch we had organized a session on art and design by Rotarian Mr.Ramesh,Rotarian Mr. Kishore and Mr.Sreejith.All the kids were asked to use their creativity and imagination into action and draw what nature looks like.It looked like a smaller version of the song Kholo..Kholo..Darwaaza..All of them made beautiful paintings..
We also organized a Talent show for the kids with the help of Shubhashish..We had performances from break dances to comedy skits.. it was really wonderful to see them on stage showing their talents…
Yipee!!Music,Dance and Campfire!!..the last programme on our list….All of us danced till our energy drained out.The kids enjoyed it a lot.
Keep Madding!!

Chilling Out With Core Chennai!
Posted by Aruna in Volunteer Files... on February 26th, 2010
Mercury rising!
Yet another sweltering summer morning stretches lazily across the city, peppering the pavements with impressively balanced tender-coconut and watermelon pyramids. Perspiration seems to be Chennai’s most-popular pastime and resigned sighs are heard almost everywhere even as the day boots up – almost being the operational word here, for we do have some significant exceptions…
In a children’s home tucked away in the city, volunteers are accosted by a bevy of energetic kids all clamouring for their attention, eagerness brimming over in their smiles. Voila, the typical welcome that precedes class at any of the several MAD centres in Chennai! For these children and their volunteer Akkas and Annas, soaring temperatures are easily forgotten in the shared energy that English class brings.
This refreshing experience of finding joy in learning through MAD is orchestrated in Chennai by a core team that not only believes the glass is half full, but also orders some chocolate cake to go with the yummy milkshake that’s no doubt in the glass. Now it looks like the team’s invaded this blog to say hullo and to offer you a slice of not the cake – alas! – but their lives.
Come on, let’s go talk to them! *beckons readers over*
Here’s Vaishnavi Srinivasan. She’s the president of the Chennai team.
Hey Prez! *waves*
Don’t call me President! It reminds me of Prathiba Patil, and I hope I’m nothing like her! she exclaims.
So we’ll obligingly call her Vaish, hm? *whispers* Her friends prefer to call her Teacher Amma, though, referring to her tough work ethic!
Oh look, there’s the perennially busy Anantha Padmanabhan, Ananth or Anzee to his friends. He’s in charge of Operations.
Wassup, Ananth! Tell us a bit about yourself before you hurry away on MAD work, will ya?
Well, what do I say?, he wonders aloud. I’m someone who wants to live life to the fullest. Never say die and be the change and all that, yeah, that’s me!
Aruna joins in when we’re chatting with Ananth. She’s the spunky girl in charge of HR. She loves her nickname Arunskie and woe to the person who calls her Arun by mistake!
Aruna is the most-consistent revenue provider for CCD with her frequent coffee cravings, and I have a feeling she’s on her way there right now!
Let’s ask her! Getting coffee, Aruna?
Oh no, she says and tries to speed away on her candy-pink Scooty. We ask her to introduce herself before she goes and this is what we get: I’m stubborn, talkative and extremely mischievous.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Aruna funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: The fear of killing innocent lives made her overlook her love for Biology and choose engineering (@ Salem College of Engineering) over medicine!
Work: Been employed with Mahindra Satyam for so long that she’s now virtually a part of the office furniture!
Special skills/interests: She’s a novelaholic, and can spend hours in the company of books
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Come on now, let’s go meet Abdul Hameed, our Corporate Relations Officer and Ravi Kumar, the most Resource-ful member of the team.
Abdul, the outgoing, happy-go-lucky, and down-to-earth maddie, appreciates and loves the fact that he learns a lot from his children. Don’t let his (inexplicable) pose in the photo fool you! This man knows how to balance fun and professionalism with perfect poise.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Abdul funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: MBBS from Madras Medical College
Work: Clinical Resource Consultant *wonders what on Earth that is!*
Special skills/interests: Movies, music, long drives, experimenting with new cuisines (this possessor of a mouthful of sweet teeth loves Pastries with a capital P!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ah, now I introduce you to one of MAD Chennai’s oldest volunteers (not in terms of service, but age
)! Ravi believes that he is too complex to be defined in a few words. You’ll find a bit of everything in me, he avers. Maybe we should call him Avial Ravi, then!
Through MAD I’ve understood that life’s more than work and money, he says. Hear, hear!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Ravi funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: Engineering from Utkal University, Orissa (Don’t ask more about this, he says)
Work: At Wipro Technologies (B-o-r-i-n-g, he yawns)
Special skills/interests: Movies, reading, cooking (his yum brinjal-and-sambar combo is legendary – as in we’ve heard a lot about it but nobody has proof of its existence
), and assembling *destroying?* computers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trailing behind them all in a rather scatterbrained way is Meenakshi Nandhini, the trainer-person in our team. Nobody believes her claim that she’s an introvert and her extreme verbosity and her weird sense of humour make us all wonder how her kids sit through her classes!
A look into your life, please, Nandu!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Nandu funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: Eight schools and no colleges, she declares with a satisfied grin. As an afterthought she adds: I’m doing my MA Eng. Lit. by correspondence, though, the same way I did my BA. Does that count?
Work: Freelancer at times, but unemployed would be a better label, she muses.
Special skills/interests: She’s curious about everything and has a looooooong list of interests that would obviously bore the eyeballs off you, so we’ll stop here!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there! I’ve run out of people to introduce! And typing out this blog post I’ve realised that we’ve quite a few (alleged) good cooks in the team. This certainly calls for a potluck, folks, for the proof of the pudding lies in the eating! We’ll arrange for one soon, I hope.
*smacks lips in anticipation*
So ciao for now, co-madsters! Make sure that the next time you visit Chennai you call us early to reserve your tables!
Tipping the cooks with candy bars is of course highly recommended!

The MAD National Conference 2010.
Posted by Jithin C Nedumala in Official on February 25th, 2010
Today’s global youth population is at a historical high of over 1.5 billion. With 89 % in developing countries, youth unemployment has assumed alarming proportions. The youth today are on average three times as likely to be unemployed as adults. In the last ten years, the world’s youth population grew by 10.5 percent while youth employment only grew by 0.2 percent. The International Labour Organization has estimated that another 1 billion young people will enter the world’s labor market within the next ten years. Many leading thinkers of our generation has indeed labeled this the “Silent Crisis”
We are all members of this Youth population and we have a stake in this Silent Crisis.
MAD is a growing community of committed youngsters who are investing their time and energy to positively impact the communities they live in. As MAD grows we need strong leaders who can ensure our programs and policies achieve greater impact, sustainability, and scale. We see value in developing youth leaders.
The MAD national conference is a platform for our core team members from across the country to develop their leadership & management skills. It is an open-minded exchange of diverse perspectives on challenges they face on the ground and a concerted effort to find solutions that are both practical and beneficial to all stakeholders.
The MAD national Conference 2010 will be held in Bangalore on 5th,6th and 7th of March and will be attended by 70 MAD core team members from 10 cities, covering 3 days of intense training sessions and discussions that focus on developing leadership skills and better understanding of the functional systems of Make a Difference.
Our focus is on action. We will have two breakout sessions where the city core teams come out with their final plan of action for the coming year. The highlight of this year is the election of the National Core Team during the Functional Break out session on Day 2.
The National Conference is an avenue to meet likeminded people and learn and share from each other’s experiences. This is an ideal platform to forge relationships that will last a lifetime.
We would like to thank Manipal County for providing us with this great venue and ensuring our team has a stress free and rejuvenating experience.
The following will be the agenda for the Conference

This phase of life: Madness
Posted by Karthik in Volunteer Files... on February 25th, 2010
Exactly one mad year ago, I blogged for the first time and on the same phase of life. I called it awesomeness. I’m in a different position right now and I can’t think of the words to come up with this blog post.
For about two years, life has changed completely for me. Some people surrounded me. New people. Good people. Great People. MAD people. And then it came to an end. This phase of life was called madness.
Farewells have always been formal before I went MAD. But then, lately it is more than just the presentation of certificates of the people leaving MAD. This time it was Hawaiian themed party at Chackola’s Habitat. And an awesome one it was, thanks to Hannah, Jazim and gang.![]()
Back to ‘event reporting’- the event started with Sanju’s well prepared ‘funny’ presentation on the year that was. This was actually funny and kinda evident that she worked hard on the fun part. All of us played the hoolahoops gaming thingy. Its just musical chairs minus the chairs plus the hoolahoops.
.
We had the farewell video played followed by the certificate distribution and again to some funny moments courtesy Jithin and his hugging routine. Game time again and this time it was the pineapple bowling, and as expected nobody got a strike. Nadheem did get close to one
![]()
The two new presidents, Shahnaz and Blesson showed us their plan for the new year and meanwhile smart people like me, ventured into the food arena and grabbed some awesome pastries. Before which Aditi chipped in – “They wouldn’t know we had these pastries would they?” ATTAAAACK !!
We enjoyed rest of the day with some dance and music and photographs galore! Check out Poornima’s album on facebook for the pics. Another MAD day, another MAD year. More to come.
Cheers and stay MAD.
Library Inauguration at Crescent!!! =D
Posted by midhika in Volunteer Files... on February 23rd, 2010
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.” ~Charles W. Eliot
I hitched a ride with Sanjana and Blesson was already waiting for us when we reached Crescent, all set to carry out his first task as the new President successfully, and I can safely say that he did it. J We walked inside to be greeted by the eagerly waiting children and after the usual “hello’s” and “hi’s” the children settled down into the room where the cupboard full of books were kept. The room was neater than usual according to Sanjana and that made it evident that they were all as excited as we were about the new library!!!
Sanjana briefed the children about the library and how the Choice school has helped us out by getting old books from the students there and as a token of appreciation we invited the Vice Principal of the school, Anjana ma’am and some of the students to come along today as well to inaugurate the brand new library! Niha, Azmeen and Ayesha, volunteers who teach at Crescent also dropped in to help. Soon enough, Blesson signalled that the group from Choice has reached. There were six students from classes 8, 9 and 11 along with the vice principal. They seemed a little shy but happy to be there nonetheless.
Everyone welcomed them in with a warm “good evening” and Sanjana introduced each of them to the children. Anjana ma’am talked to the children about how important books are to them and how much reading English books can help them develop their language and vocabulary. She told how eager everyone was to help out by giving their old books and the children must make the most use of them. One of the students who came also talked to the crescent children about how books can become your friends and how much you can enjoy reading them. However, Reading was not the only focus here. Anjana ma’am made the children showcase their singing talents and two of the girls, Sulfath and Ramseela, with no hesitation, came forward and sang beautifully!
After the joyous singing we moved onto the most important part of the day – the inauguration of the library! It was rather a very pretty sight; interestingly colourful books stacked very neatly into a light brown, very attractive glass cupboard. It would tempt anyone to read at least one book from there I am sure. As if those books weren’t already enough, there were some fun board games as well. Blesson invited one of the crescent girls and one student from Choice to inaugurate the library by taking out the first book and reading it loud to everyone. Aysha, who was proudly appointed as the new librarian, along with a student from Choice happily chose “Three little Bears” as the first book. Sanjana was standing right next to them with so much eagerness on her face that I am sure she secretly wanted to inaugurate it herself!
Aysha started reading out the story to everyone and she did it so well that it would’ve made any MAD volunteer proud!!!
Once the most important task was over and a loud round of applause, we moved onto the vote of thanks by one of the Crescent kids who showed a little hesitation at first but after some soothing words from Sanjana she was happy to do it. As a token of appreciation for all help provided by the Choice school, Sanjana thanked them as well. Before leaving they walked around and interacted with the children and as a perfect ending to the wonderful event, Crescent provided all of us with yummy treats. Once that was done and the library in its place, we all left the place with a content heart as well as a content stomach.
Special thanks to Nikhila, Jake, Justin, Niha and Azmeen for all the help!!
Some interesting facts about our brand new Library
—
Total number of books – 411
Books from Choice – 341
Books from our donors – 34
Books from our volunteers – 36
GO MAD!!! =D
It’s a feeling you can’t even describe
Posted by Karthik in Volunteer Files... on February 20th, 2010
Every time, every single thing that you teach, you hang on to every single word and you hang on every single moment, for that perfection. And for Make A Difference, when the kids are reciprocating it back to you, sharing the same rhythm and rapport, they’re not just reflecting what you’ve… the thoughts that you’re wrapped up in, but also what their lives are wrapped up in, too. It’s too much of a moment… it’s, it’s one of the most unusual epitomes that you’ll ever come to face. And that’s the only way you can look at something like that. You can’t even say you love doing this or this is what I have to do or anything of that sort. I don’t even think that’s a way to describe it. It’s not about… it’s, it’s about, it’s about all the emotional baggage that you, you come with and that you are, are just… you finally have an outlet for. That’s what Make A Difference is to me and when it’s reflected back at you by these 34 kids, it’s … I don’t know, it’s a feeling you can’t even describe.
I’ve learnt- goodbyes will always hurt, pictures can never replace being there, memories forget the hard times, words can never replace feelings, and heroes often go unsung. Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them.
Cheers and stay MAD, forever.
We are hiring
Posted by Sanjana in Volunteer Files... on February 18th, 2010
Chief Operating Officer
MAD has been growing steadily and is now seeking to dramatically accelerate growth. We are looking for a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience scaling an organization, leading an executive management team, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. The individual must be a leader who is able to ensure that MAD delivers measurable, value based results that make our vision a reality. More importantly, the successful candidate will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to our mission. While it is essential that the COO brings efficient and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organization, it is also critical that the team retain the creative spark that drives the MAD concept.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated professional to assume a pivotal role in the evolution of a fast-growing, highly respected organization. We are seeking an individual of outstanding quality with a respected track record.
