I conducted my first class in Remand Home for Boys, Shivaji Nagar, Pune, and for someone who has been teaching a group of docile, well mannered young girls for the past year & a half- a mere half a minute with a group of 8, adolescent strong boys made me realise that my usual way of teaching girls is not going to work here! Throughout the 60 minutes, I had to be on my toes!! The moment the boys got bored, they would just run away leaving me exasperated!( we were on the playground so there were plenty of distractions). Nonetheless, apart from the poor concentration span and absolute dislike for notebooks, they are very bright kids and have an excellent vocab!! They even knew words like “helicopter”( I was stunned when they spelled it correctly!). Vehemently refusing to enter the classroom, the boys were very eager to learn, but wanted to stay on the playground, and it being the 1st day, I complied to them.
In sum, it is going to be a real challenge to hold their concentration for 2 whole hours, and we have to keep inventing and re-inventing our methods of teaching!
