Whenever someone asks me what we do in MAD, I always say ‘We Educate’. And I have always believed in this. A lot of people can teach but we strive to make a difference. Why am I saying this suddenly?
It all started with a desperate call from a centre authority who said to me that one of my students was in the hospital and was crying for me. As much as I try to remember, I cant seem to remember how I reached the hospital or what happened.
I saw her crying with bruising all over. She was reluctant to talk to any of her teachers but asked for me. I asked her what happened and then the story unfolded. Her drunk father had beaten her up. Her sister (who is 13yrs) “grew up” so her family decided that she ought to get married. When she revolted, she got beat up. My student (8yrs) saw this and ran away from home and when they found her, they beat her up too.
I have spent the last 4 hrs consoling this girl while the social workers and the centre authorities convinced her parents to let her sister finish atleast her 10th standard. I dont know what I would have done if the centre authorities werent so supportive. What would have happened if this girl wasnt in school or with MAD? There are like a million questions that are running in my head right now.
We dont only teach English or Computers. There is just so much.
