Class control measures:

These are activities / techniques the volunteer can use to maintain discipline in the class.

Establishing ground rules: (courtesy TTF And Rocky)

The Following Activity Involves 5 Steps

1.      Identifying what’s right and wrong

2.      Discussing and deciding with the children the rules required for the class

3.      Write it beautifully with color pencils on an A3 Sheet

4.      Every Student sign underneath the Rules

5.      Establishing a Reward System.

1.  Identifying what’s right and wrong: Happy face Vs Sad face:

Divide the board into two and put a smiley face and a sad face at the top of the two columns.

Know what ground rules you want before hand. You can adapt them according to the students’ contributions.

Give the children examples of types of behavior and as a group decide which column to put them in. Depending on the level of the students you could explain the types of behavior or use mime to get your message across. Eg: you could mime making noise in class. Then ask the children, “ is it ok to make noise in class?”. Establish that its not ok and write ‘ making noise in class’ in the sad column.

When you have done two or three as a class, divide the children into roups and get them to add as many things as they can to the columns. Then collate all the groups answers together on the board.

2. Discussing and deciding with the children the rules required for the class:

Now based on the above activity discussed above, ask your children what should ideally be the rules in a class so that every student will be able to study well and based on their answers make a bunch of rules.

3. Write it beautifully with color pencils on an A3 Sheet: Ground rule posters: You can then display these rules on a poster on the wall so that you can refer to them later. Groups can be asked to make the posters. Talk with the class about what will happen if the ground rules are broken.(see below when rules are broken)

4. Class contract: A class contract is a negotiated document written by you and your students. The contract outlines what you expect from the children and what they expect from you.Make it more formal by signing it and having all the children signing it. Alternately you can all authenticate it with thumb impressions.

Now paste the poster in a visible part of your classroom and make sure it’s visible to every Student of yours.

5. Establishing a Reward System: The Certificates System: Colorful and interesting postcard size printed certificates can be obtained from your batch head. You are required to give one of your students based on their performance or behavior in each class.

Decide on the parameters for which you will be rewarding the Certificates: paying attention in class, listening to others when they speak, co-operation, making an effort etc. At the end of each class, Award one certificate to one child who has really put in an effort to improve. Explain the rules and parameters to the children at the beginning of the year. At the end of the year, there can be prizes for students with the most number of certificates.

 

 Other than the Above, the following techniques can also be used while taking the class

1. Praise the positive: If you have a difficult group, its really important to praise good work and behaviour when it occurs, rather than highlighting the negative. One way to do this with young learners is Golden stars.

3. The Scout Clap

A particular pattern of clap must be established by the teacher and the instruction should be that when the teacher claps that way, the students must respond with a similar clap back and then remain silent.

For eg: the teacher can clap. 1. 1. 123

The students can respond 2. 2. 123

4. Golden stars: Premise: By rewarding positive behaviour, however small, the teacher can reduce the occurrence of negative behaviour.

On a chart, list out the names of all students in the group, with space beside each name to put up stars won.

Decide on the parameters for which you will be rewarding the stars: paying attention in class, listening to others when they speak, co-operation, etc. At the end of each class, go through list and put stars on the chart by the names of the children who have worked well. Explain the rules and parameters to the children at the beginning of the year. At the end of the year, there can be prizes for students with the most stars.

Once begun, it is important that the tempo is maintained, even if the teacher changes.

5. Divide & Rule(By Rocky Kurien)

For MAD classes to be effective class participation is extremely important as the focus is on spoken English. Formal text book based 
lessons are hence not very useful. One method to motivate and interest the kids to participate in class is divide the class into two or more teams and structure the classes in such a way that each speaking activity becomes a game. This introduces the element of fun to the class and the spirit of competition 
keeps the kids on their toes and eager to participate. 

For example a game used to explain the “questioning” Language Function is “Who  am I” 

The class is split into two teams 
Each team selects a celebrity/Personality: The opposing Team has 10 questions to guess hwo the personality is 
Answers to the questions can only be in Yes/No. Questions have to be asked in English. 

A game like this brings in the element of fun. Each team is excited to figure out the answer and is excited to ask the questions 
thereby using the language function. 

When rules are broken: Discuss with your children and establish exactly how you will react if rules are broken. You may decide to give each student three chances in each class. If a student breaks a rule, his/her name goes up on the board. If their name gets on the board three times, further action will be taken. Further action will need to be decided based on what works best for a particular class. Be sure that you will be able to carry out the action before you mention it to the group.

Remember that we will only learn from our mistakes. Going into a class and getting the right balance between discipline and friendliness is not easy. It also depends on where you are teaching. It is best to start out a bit strict so as to get off on the right foot. It is always easier to lighten up once the mutual respect has been established than to have to get stricter as the weeks go by.

    for class control in my class after discussion and my kids approval
    WE decided that when i need their complete attention.
    I Will BANG!! 2ce on the desk and say “ALL EARS”
    then they will in return BANG 2ce and say “0PEN” and will maintain the silence till i give them the permission to speak,its fun for them and works for me in getting their complete attention.

    Hi Guys,
    Not a member -yet, but thought I would put my two bits in anyway..
    When we were kids, our teacher used to divide our class into two halves, and organise a ‘game’ of ‘cricket’.
    One team would be batting, the other bowling.
    The bowling team would ‘bowl’ questions to the ‘batting’ team :-) and each answered question would score runs. Was real interesting.
    At the end of the session, the winning side got lollies!
