Past continuous, future perfect!!
Posted by Ajanta in Volunteer Files... on November 9th, 2009
No, this is not a hostile takeover of syllabus content-writing rights from EZVidya!! Neither is this a lecture on the tenses to be taught in next week’s classes. Instead, the four words above are an effort at closed-captioning the journey of Make A Difference Dilli (MADD) in the last few months….
Confused?? So were we…well, at least in the beginning…
The month was August of 2009, and the volunteer base of MADD had shrunk to worrying levels….. Something had to be done and fast! We were aware of the enormous potential that lay untapped in the city and were eager to uncover the identities of all future MADDsters…
Thus began our search at various colleges across the city. Presentations were made at the institutions and the reception was overwhelmingly positive!! MADD was appreciated for its professional and organized attitude in conducting the entire event and before we knew it, we were interviewing quite a large number of enthusiastic young people raring to make a difference in the lives of the thousands of underprivileged kids in the city…

By September, MADD was 52-member strong and ready to take on the world!! We organized our first training session mid-month with all the volunteers to familiarize them with various aspects of our MAD world. Starting with the nuances of dealing with children, we covered various aspects of the syllabus structure and discussed ways to make classes more fun!! The training session (or Rendezvous as we like to call it !) was very enjoyable and proved to be an excellent medium through which several creative ideas were exchanged! The old and new volunteers were given a chance to interact, share their thoughts and resolve their queries…
Now, just in case you were wondering where all the fun was, take a look at the pictures below!!

The dust began to settle after all and classes resumed in full swing…The volunteers and the kids found in each other the source of a new beginning…the inspiration to change the ways things were done in the past and to make a difference in their lives and the lives of those they touched…

The last Sunday of October was MADD’s first monthly meet!! The objective was to gain valuable feedback and share new views and thoughts with the MADD family. The event was, among other things, a whole lot of fun!! Constructive feedback was shared by the volunteers as they discussed the ups and downs of their experiences. It was a delight to see the old volunteers helping out the new volunteers with teaching methods and tip on handling particularly naughty kids!!
For me, that was the highlight of the day, in fact it was the highlight of the months that we had left behind….because I knew, right there, that we stopped being a team and had merged into a family….
MAD Bangalore – results of the First Workshop
Posted by Tan in Newsletter V 1.0, Volunteer Files... on June 25th, 2009
Recently MAD Bangalore organized the first ever workshop (Previous Post) on June 20, 2009. I know you were eager to know what happened in there. Well, here is what has happened there.

MAD Bangalore is all set...
This workshop was focused on inviting all the people who showed interest in MAD over the last couple of years and who have registered on the MAD website. The core team here contacted each and everyone in the list, whoever was available either over the phone or over emails. We met a varied group of people – differing demographically as well as in their motive to join MAD. There were people from all segments of the society – students, professionals, retired bureaucrats and social workers. Some were very keen to join asap, while some had a blurred idea about the MAD vision and mission. The interactions with those people were awesome and most of the time it was a two way learning. However, after two weeks of meeting and interacting with all the fascinated people, we came up with a list of those who committed to be present during the workshop.
Many of those who committed turned up. It’s true that the crowd was lesser than expected, but, we were able to pull in a good number of people. The workshop started with a motive to select those who were not only keen to join but can commit and understand the importance of staying involved and giving.
The evening was fine when we met the people in Rotary House, Bangalore. People showed as much interest in knowing and exploring about MAD as much as the core team was engrossed in explaining the vision and answering their queries. The gathering was good with positive flow of energy and information.
Finally, we have got a list of people who can be part of MAD. They are equally excited and committed to be involved and to give. The final team of volunteers would be chosen soon.
MAD Bangalore is all set now and so is Bangalore.
Come, lets join hands and positively, Make a Difference!
MAD Bangalore Recruitment Drive

MAD is in Bangalore! And Bangalore is all set to Make A Difference.

... is in Bangalore!
MAD Bangalore is all geared up to get into the activities and is eyeing the foremost classes to begin in July. At this point in time, we need YOU to come up and share the stage.
The society has given us so much from the very first moment that we were born. We need to give back something too. There is a need – a perfect want where we can contribute and fill up the space – a gap between unequal strata of our society. Education is a tool which can easily bridge this gap. WE CAN share the knowledge we have with them who are in need of it and can utilize it better, but have no resources to tap. WE CAN stand beside them and help them stand on their own feet.
Do you love to be with kids – surrounded, respected and inspired by them?
Do you think teaching English to a kid will help India grow?
Can you give away 2 hours of your time weekly?
Do you think that you can Make A Difference?
Do you have it in you, what it takes to MAD?
Can you do it?
I CAN, CAN YOU?
If you think YOU too CAN, then come let’s join hands and take the pledge. Let’s work together towards edifying the basic and most wide spread segment of our society – the children – the destitute – the future of the nation.
MAD Bangalore is organizing its very first recruitment workshop this Saturday, June 20, 2009. Let’s work together and contribute – together, WE CAN and WE WILL Make A Difference!
You all are invited!!
Event: MAD Bangalore Recruitment Drive
The Blind Date: June 20, 2009
Rendezvous spot: Rotary House, Bangalore (Contact for exact location)
Proposed Time: 4 PM to 7 PM (Saturday Evening – so, all of you can drop in easily)
I CONFESS
Posted by Archana in Volunteer Files... on June 1st, 2009
I recently received a mail from someone conducting a study asking me for my motivation in joining MAD. It’s a difficult question to answer, mainly because my motivation was not idealism, most definitely not. And each time I attend a MAD gathering and see all the bright-eyed volunteers, all charged up about changing the world I feel even more squeamish about my reasons for joining. But that’s enough indulgence in my sense of guilt and time to go back to where it all began.
I had just moved to Kochi from Bangalore and having contacted MAD through Sabarish, I happened to meet Jithin (ex-Prez) at the Palluruthy orphanage. Jithin then proceeded to enlighten me on the fact that “MAD was a youth organisation where older people wouldn’t fit in. We’ve had bad experiences with older volunteers who give us too much gyan and constantly criticise us. So we want only young volunteers.” Charming! It’s the kind of conversation that the Roadies anchors have with the contestants. (Later, I found out that there was an actual age bar to joining. Jeez! Talk about paranoid)
I figured that if everyone at MAD was as bizarre as the President(why else would he be their representative?), this organization could be an endless source of mirth and entertainment in the new town.
So, despite the brush-off, my kids and I would arrive at Palluruthy every Sunday to interact with the kids. And almost the first thing I realised was that the rest of the volunteers were completely reasonable human beings and were unlikely to provide me with any fodder for personal amusement.
Instead, I was increasingly taken up by the idealism of the MAD volunteers who amazed me with the huge amounts of time and energy that they devoted to this cause. Their patience and optimism was awe-inspiring and contagious. And as for the kids- they were vibrant little fellows, full of spunk and opinions. It was difficult not to fall in love with them even while they were shredding your class to bits and beating each other half to death (rather professionally) over little disagreements.
And so it’s been going on for two years now – a lot of hard work and a little progress. Learning much more than teaching. In fact, the reason that I have stayed on is also probably not very honorable - because I get back much more than I give.
So, the confession was not as difficult as I thought it would be. But the problem still remains – what shall I give as my motivation in the survey?
MAD Mumbai is Looking for You! Yes, YOU!!!

Fear not, MAD offers you a topic to talk to anyone and everyone. Not only will those aunties of your mom’s kitty parties not pull your cheeks anymore but also you’ll finally have an answer to your dad’s friends’ questions about your future plans (Future is not equal to what you are having for dinner tonight) All you need to tell them is..
MAD Mumbai is planning their next recruitment drive. Thats all….!!
Well, we have 570 children in 3 centres which equals to around 120 volunteers. After our very successful recruitment drive numero uno, we have 24 volunteers. So this number needs to increase 5 fold. So we have a simple E1B5 (Each 1 Bring 5) virus which we are planning to spread. Mind you, we hope for it to have even more far-reaching effects than the H1N1 virus.
So,spread the word through your fingers (err..facebook, twiterring, emailing, etc etc ) or through your mouth (Talk to people) or any other way you want to.
Think you have friends who are MAD enough to join us? Volunteers can :
1. Teach kids English and Computers
2. Lend us their creative streak.
3. Help us raise money.
4. Organise career awareness fairs and programmes.
Minimum requirement is 2hours per week for a period of 1 year.
Everyone, flex your fingers, dial those numbers, type in those blogs, sms, emails and get sending. Spread the virus.. NOW!
Those interested, do mail mumbai@makeadiff.in

MAD Rec’n'Work, Cochin :)
Posted by Jr. in The Things That Happen... on April 28th, 2009
Over this weekend, the Mad team pulled off a great recruitment and workshop at the Rotary Balbhavan in Panampilly Nagar..
Since we’ve established by now how lazy I’m, and given how sleepy I’m now, I’ll limit the words, and let the pictures do all the talking.. You need to say anything more, you know where the comments go..
Day 1
The day started out with volunteers trickling in by ones and twos and being greeted by the all new, and eyebrow raising MAD banner, and of course, the less controversial Welcoming Committee
Followed by the usual HR undercover operations to divide and conquer…. Team Splits:
Time for the MAD Presentation courtesy Sanju, some group discussions and a few brave newbie presentations
After this moment, no more pics of the day were taken.. Why?? Well, apparently, Nidheesh was outside putting the camera to much better use than I was : (sigh)
But he did return just in time to witness a few harmless HR games to get the volunteers better acquainted with how crazy MAD really is..
:
(PS: I’ve still no idea what he was trying to do even now)
The interviews followed where we managed to scare quite a few of those who came.. Sorry about that folks, we just HAD to find out if you were really indeed the best.. If you DID make it through, you can pat yourself on the back for a job well done !
Day 2
The ones who got picked came back on Sunday for Process Training… They went through slide after slide of Jithin’s excellent(read very long) informative(read boring) and eye opening(read sleep generating) presentations..
But things weren’t THAT bad.. There were also fun sessions to break the monotony.. Like the Passing the Headless and Clothless Doll one and the Bombing Chennai one..
And that was about it for a great weekend.. Got to meet some great people.. Thanks to you guys who showed interest, and then showed up for the weekend.. And let me apologise for the recruiters who might’ve scared you during the interview.. It’s all part of the bigger picture
Final Note : Seeing the people who came for the Rec session, talking to them, and observing them; I’ve a feeling that this year’s gonna be greater still…
A MAD MAD welcome to all the Noobies.. See ya people around..
