I CONFESS
Posted by Archana in Volunteer Files... on June 1st, 2009
I recently received a mail from someone conducting a study asking me for my motivation in joining MAD. It’s a difficult question to answer, mainly because my motivation was not idealism, most definitely not. And each time I attend a MAD gathering and see all the bright-eyed volunteers, all charged up about changing the world I feel even more squeamish about my reasons for joining. But that’s enough indulgence in my sense of guilt and time to go back to where it all began.
I had just moved to Kochi from Bangalore and having contacted MAD through Sabarish, I happened to meet Jithin (ex-Prez) at the Palluruthy orphanage. Jithin then proceeded to enlighten me on the fact that “MAD was a youth organisation where older people wouldn’t fit in. We’ve had bad experiences with older volunteers who give us too much gyan and constantly criticise us. So we want only young volunteers.” Charming! It’s the kind of conversation that the Roadies anchors have with the contestants. (Later, I found out that there was an actual age bar to joining. Jeez! Talk about paranoid)
I figured that if everyone at MAD was as bizarre as the President(why else would he be their representative?), this organization could be an endless source of mirth and entertainment in the new town.
So, despite the brush-off, my kids and I would arrive at Palluruthy every Sunday to interact with the kids. And almost the first thing I realised was that the rest of the volunteers were completely reasonable human beings and were unlikely to provide me with any fodder for personal amusement.
Instead, I was increasingly taken up by the idealism of the MAD volunteers who amazed me with the huge amounts of time and energy that they devoted to this cause. Their patience and optimism was awe-inspiring and contagious. And as for the kids- they were vibrant little fellows, full of spunk and opinions. It was difficult not to fall in love with them even while they were shredding your class to bits and beating each other half to death (rather professionally) over little disagreements.
And so it’s been going on for two years now – a lot of hard work and a little progress. Learning much more than teaching. In fact, the reason that I have stayed on is also probably not very honorable - because I get back much more than I give.
So, the confession was not as difficult as I thought it would be. But the problem still remains – what shall I give as my motivation in the survey?

My MAD life kick-started as an intern under Mathew in YMCA a little more than 2 years ago. A month after joining, I got a call from the Prez telling me that I had to shift to Pallu. If my memory serves me right, his actual words were, “Ramu, I need someone as big as you there”; To which I jokingly replied, “Why? Do you want me to rough up the kids or something?” This conversation wouldn’t come as a surprise to any of the MAD oldies because Pallu, back then, had the not so enviable distinction of being the roughest, toughest & most unruly orphanage in the network. And the Prez had most conveniently chosen me to handle Class 5 which, even by Pallu standards, was every volunteer’s nightmare. So off I went for my first Pallu class with the Prez wishing me ‘Happy Hunting’ and me praying to all the Gods ‘to prevent the hunter from becoming the hunted’!
The first day of class told me 2 things: a) these kids are extremely street-smart & hence have an acute sense of practicality when it comes to approaching a problem b) none of the established MAD teaching techniques are going to work for them. Thus began a string of experiments in new teaching methods code-named ‘The Pallu-Factor’, most of which would never work in any other orphanage (Cathy & Meera would definitely remember the dramas the boys played before them as part of the class). In more instances than one, the MAD syllabus was kicked out of the window in the process of experimentation as it was seen to be too ‘baby-like’ for my boys. Special mention here for the ‘Jon-man’ (real name withheld for security reasons as Jr. seriously suspects this person’s involvement as the ‘other party’ in the now infamous ‘Tuffy-ca Lewinsky’ scandal) who joined me this year and pledged his unceasing support for my crazy ideas, thus helping to perfect ‘The Pallu-Factor’.
I still remember the day when I had to take a break from teaching due to my own exams. Nikki was to substitute for me (although it took a lot of cajoling & copious amounts of cheese cake from Pandhal to get her to agree, as she firmly believed that I was setting her up to be murdered considering the rep that my boys had). My happiness knew no bounds when she called me that evening to say that she had one of the best classes ever and the boys were very well behaved. She wanted to know how I had done it. I was proud of my boys because I knew that it had nothing to do with what I had done, it was their true potential showing.
To cut a long story short, my boys have been with me through 5th, 6th & 7th. As is the custom in Pallu, the boys have to shift to another orphanage after 7th. Today, I went to see them before their exams and to give them each a copy of the pic I have uploaded here. I don’t want to think of it as a parting gift; it is more a gift to remind them that irrespective of wherever I am, my heart will always be with them. Unlike the popular perception that parting is such sweet sorrow, there was not a single drop of tear shed. We looked at eachother as brothers; as friends; as men – the older man with the satisfaction that he has done all that he could & the younger ones with confidence and promise in their eyes reassuring the former. Although when we came together for a final group hug, I couldn’t help but notice a few moistened eyes (afterall, boys cannot turn into men overnight, can they?)
I guess my MAD life would also end with their leaving, though I can’t take a call on that now as am unsure of where life is taking me at present. But then, life is quite unpredictable as we all know. As I told my boys – “I know life is a struggle… But don’t think that it is impossible… Each of you have the potential to be better than the best… I believe in you… All you have to do is believe in yourself… And this world is yours for the taking!!!”
My first class.. :)
Posted by Bimal in The Classroom Docs, The First Day... on January 26th, 2009
It sarted off as a normal day (
) , went to college .; attended 4 hours of class ( or sleep rather
) ., bunked the remaining 4 hours just for MAD ( now that seems like a solid reason to bunk class..
)..
MAD day..
Reached Pallu SnehaBhavan @ 4:10 p.m ..! Saw Bindhia.. said Hi.. walked around.. made a few phone calls.. By then , it was 4:30.. Krishnan , SUmesh , Rocky , Nikhila and all the others were in the campus by then.! Out of curiosity , I ask Rocky where Nikhil( my volunteer) was .. And he was like ” He should be here any minute..”.. I was like “Okay”..
10 minutes pass by , and no sign of Nikhil yet..! That was when it hit me ;, Maybe Maybe this could be my first day as an unconfirmed volunteer…
And guess what, it sure was.. Rocky asked me if I could handle the class by myself.. Well , I had to say YES coz I dint really have a choice…! It was just my third day @ MAD , so wasn’t really prepared for anything but Interning..!
.. Nikhila walks up to me , and asks me to talk about Electronic gadgets..
The best thing of the day happened next.. There is this particular kid in my class named Akshay… he usually never bothers to sit in our class.. A very distracted young guy..! Before I walked into the class , He told me that he wont be coming in..! Well , as a teacher ( atleast for now ) , I tried my luck with advice..! I told him about the wonderfull things he could possibly achieve when he grows up into an adult..! I asked him if he always wanted to be small .. ANd to my suprise , he said NO and walked with me to the class… !
I never ever in my life thought that a kid like Akshay would be inspired to learn with a lil piece of advice..! Man , you ppl have no idea how proud I was of myself..!
Class Begins…
I started off by asking them if they knew what Gadgets meant..! No1 actually knew the meaning , though most of them tried their luck with guesses..! I explained to them what a Gadget is..! Then I moved on to Mobile Phones and the advantages of using them.. The latest features etc..etc..! We then talked about Microwave Ovens.. We then had a small session of sentence forming using the knowledge we gained..! Most of the kids did quite a good job..! SOme of them , overwhelmingly happy to be learning new stuff..! It was all smooth , untill something really bAD(???) happens..!
The Seyth issue.. !!!!!
There was this kid named Seyth , who was a new comer to the Orphanage.. He starts to throw stones on our roof..!! Suddenly , all the kids get distracted and start calling him words ( most of which I never understood ! ) Then with a lil bit of help from the volunteer I borrowed from 6th , I manged to get all the kids back into my class..! Well , I thought the problem ended there ..! But sadly it didn’t , Seyth comes into our class , and calls all the kids words ( In Hindi..! so I couldnt even Guess what the words meant
) , I think some of the words were also aimed at me.. (
) As is obvious , it ends up as a verbal war soon..! To my relief , the new guy accepted defeat and left the class..!
“What do you want to learn” session
Later , the kids wanted to know aabout Hiroshima and Nagasaki ..! That wasnt someting I knew a lot about..! I just talked to them about Pearl Harbour..and the incidents that followed..!
In a nutshell , that was what my first class was like..! QUite scary but then , I enjoyed the experience..!
Pallu Library Inauguration
Posted by Bindia George in Volunteer Files... on January 14th, 2009
As the clock struck 5′O Clock today evening (14th January 2009), the DP World representatives started pouring in for the formal inauguration of the Palluruthy MAD Library. <That was a moment of truth, when I realised that DP World also shared the same amount of punctuality as MAD>
MAD Pallu volunteers had been running helter-shelter for the last few months, to hand-pick from multiple stores around the city, quality books for the kids. This includes English, Malayalam, Hindi – and have been categorized into 3 levels & placed in appropriate racks.
In a nutshell; the inaugural activities included a round around the campus; peak into the fully functional library; chit-chat with volunteers/father/kids; stories at Snehabhavan; MAD Acivities; tasty samosa & cakes; games; and lotta photos…
“Pictures speaks a thousand words” – so, I am not elaborating too much… Here comes the collage of the Formal Inauguration of MAD Palluruthy Don Bosco Snehabhavan Library.

NOTE: Pallu libary has been sponsored by Dubai Port World (Kochi wing of DP world was started in Feb 2005 to construct, develop & operate an International Container Transhipment Terminal – an India Gateway Terminal – at Vallarpadam).
