Chilling Out With Core Chennai!
Posted by Aruna in Volunteer Files... on February 26th, 2010
Mercury rising!
Yet another sweltering summer morning stretches lazily across the city, peppering the pavements with impressively balanced tender-coconut and watermelon pyramids. Perspiration seems to be Chennai’s most-popular pastime and resigned sighs are heard almost everywhere even as the day boots up – almost being the operational word here, for we do have some significant exceptions…
In a children’s home tucked away in the city, volunteers are accosted by a bevy of energetic kids all clamouring for their attention, eagerness brimming over in their smiles. Voila, the typical welcome that precedes class at any of the several MAD centres in Chennai! For these children and their volunteer Akkas and Annas, soaring temperatures are easily forgotten in the shared energy that English class brings.
This refreshing experience of finding joy in learning through MAD is orchestrated in Chennai by a core team that not only believes the glass is half full, but also orders some chocolate cake to go with the yummy milkshake that’s no doubt in the glass. Now it looks like the team’s invaded this blog to say hullo and to offer you a slice of not the cake – alas! – but their lives.
Come on, let’s go talk to them! *beckons readers over*
Here’s Vaishnavi Srinivasan. She’s the president of the Chennai team.
Hey Prez! *waves*
Don’t call me President! It reminds me of Prathiba Patil, and I hope I’m nothing like her! she exclaims.
So we’ll obligingly call her Vaish, hm? *whispers* Her friends prefer to call her Teacher Amma, though, referring to her tough work ethic!
Oh look, there’s the perennially busy Anantha Padmanabhan, Ananth or Anzee to his friends. He’s in charge of Operations.
Wassup, Ananth! Tell us a bit about yourself before you hurry away on MAD work, will ya?
Well, what do I say?, he wonders aloud. I’m someone who wants to live life to the fullest. Never say die and be the change and all that, yeah, that’s me!
Aruna joins in when we’re chatting with Ananth. She’s the spunky girl in charge of HR. She loves her nickname Arunskie and woe to the person who calls her Arun by mistake!
Aruna is the most-consistent revenue provider for CCD with her frequent coffee cravings, and I have a feeling she’s on her way there right now!
Let’s ask her! Getting coffee, Aruna?
Oh no, she says and tries to speed away on her candy-pink Scooty. We ask her to introduce herself before she goes and this is what we get: I’m stubborn, talkative and extremely mischievous.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Aruna funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: The fear of killing innocent lives made her overlook her love for Biology and choose engineering (@ Salem College of Engineering) over medicine!
Work: Been employed with Mahindra Satyam for so long that she’s now virtually a part of the office furniture!
Special skills/interests: She’s a novelaholic, and can spend hours in the company of books
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Come on now, let’s go meet Abdul Hameed, our Corporate Relations Officer and Ravi Kumar, the most Resource-ful member of the team.
Abdul, the outgoing, happy-go-lucky, and down-to-earth maddie, appreciates and loves the fact that he learns a lot from his children. Don’t let his (inexplicable) pose in the photo fool you! This man knows how to balance fun and professionalism with perfect poise.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Abdul funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: MBBS from Madras Medical College
Work: Clinical Resource Consultant *wonders what on Earth that is!*
Special skills/interests: Movies, music, long drives, experimenting with new cuisines (this possessor of a mouthful of sweet teeth loves Pastries with a capital P!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ah, now I introduce you to one of MAD Chennai’s oldest volunteers (not in terms of service, but age
)! Ravi believes that he is too complex to be defined in a few words. You’ll find a bit of everything in me, he avers. Maybe we should call him Avial Ravi, then!
Through MAD I’ve understood that life’s more than work and money, he says. Hear, hear!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Ravi funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: Engineering from Utkal University, Orissa (Don’t ask more about this, he says)
Work: At Wipro Technologies (B-o-r-i-n-g, he yawns)
Special skills/interests: Movies, reading, cooking (his yum brinjal-and-sambar combo is legendary – as in we’ve heard a lot about it but nobody has proof of its existence
), and assembling *destroying?* computers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trailing behind them all in a rather scatterbrained way is Meenakshi Nandhini, the trainer-person in our team. Nobody believes her claim that she’s an introvert and her extreme verbosity and her weird sense of humour make us all wonder how her kids sit through her classes!
A look into your life, please, Nandu!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Nandu funda~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Education: Eight schools and no colleges, she declares with a satisfied grin. As an afterthought she adds: I’m doing my MA Eng. Lit. by correspondence, though, the same way I did my BA. Does that count?
Work: Freelancer at times, but unemployed would be a better label, she muses.
Special skills/interests: She’s curious about everything and has a looooooong list of interests that would obviously bore the eyeballs off you, so we’ll stop here!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there! I’ve run out of people to introduce! And typing out this blog post I’ve realised that we’ve quite a few (alleged) good cooks in the team. This certainly calls for a potluck, folks, for the proof of the pudding lies in the eating! We’ll arrange for one soon, I hope.
*smacks lips in anticipation*
So ciao for now, co-madsters! Make sure that the next time you visit Chennai you call us early to reserve your tables!
Tipping the cooks with candy bars is of course highly recommended!
- Ms. A. N. Ony Mous, MAD Chennai team member
Today is (Drumroll) 10K Day !!! :P

My MAD life kick-started as an intern under Mathew in YMCA a little more than 2 years ago. A month after joining, I got a call from the Prez telling me that I had to shift to Pallu. If my memory serves me right, his actual words were, “Ramu, I need someone as big as you there”; To which I jokingly replied, “Why? Do you want me to rough up the kids or something?” This conversation wouldn’t come as a surprise to any of the MAD oldies because Pallu, back then, had the not so enviable distinction of being the roughest, toughest & most unruly orphanage in the network. And the Prez had most conveniently chosen me to handle Class 5 which, even by Pallu standards, was every volunteer’s nightmare. So off I went for my first Pallu class with the Prez wishing me ‘Happy Hunting’ and me praying to all the Gods ‘to prevent the hunter from becoming the hunted’!
The first day of class told me 2 things: a) these kids are extremely street-smart & hence have an acute sense of practicality when it comes to approaching a problem b) none of the established MAD teaching techniques are going to work for them. Thus began a string of experiments in new teaching methods code-named ‘The Pallu-Factor’, most of which would never work in any other orphanage (Cathy & Meera would definitely remember the dramas the boys played before them as part of the class). In more instances than one, the MAD syllabus was kicked out of the window in the process of experimentation as it was seen to be too ‘baby-like’ for my boys. Special mention here for the ‘Jon-man’ (real name withheld for security reasons as Jr. seriously suspects this person’s involvement as the ‘other party’ in the now infamous ‘Tuffy-ca Lewinsky’ scandal) who joined me this year and pledged his unceasing support for my crazy ideas, thus helping to perfect ‘The Pallu-Factor’.
I still remember the day when I had to take a break from teaching due to my own exams. Nikki was to substitute for me (although it took a lot of cajoling & copious amounts of cheese cake from Pandhal to get her to agree, as she firmly believed that I was setting her up to be murdered considering the rep that my boys had). My happiness knew no bounds when she called me that evening to say that she had one of the best classes ever and the boys were very well behaved. She wanted to know how I had done it. I was proud of my boys because I knew that it had nothing to do with what I had done, it was their true potential showing.
To cut a long story short, my boys have been with me through 5th, 6th & 7th. As is the custom in Pallu, the boys have to shift to another orphanage after 7th. Today, I went to see them before their exams and to give them each a copy of the pic I have uploaded here. I don’t want to think of it as a parting gift; it is more a gift to remind them that irrespective of wherever I am, my heart will always be with them. Unlike the popular perception that parting is such sweet sorrow, there was not a single drop of tear shed. We looked at eachother as brothers; as friends; as men – the older man with the satisfaction that he has done all that he could & the younger ones with confidence and promise in their eyes reassuring the former. Although when we came together for a final group hug, I couldn’t help but notice a few moistened eyes (afterall, boys cannot turn into men overnight, can they?)
I guess my MAD life would also end with their leaving, though I can’t take a call on that now as am unsure of where life is taking me at present. But then, life is quite unpredictable as we all know. As I told my boys – “I know life is a struggle… But don’t think that it is impossible… Each of you have the potential to be better than the best… I believe in you… All you have to do is believe in yourself… And this world is yours for the taking!!!”
LAST DAY SPECIAL :)
Posted by Rizwana Tharola in Volunteer Files... on February 17th, 2009
On 8th Feb, when Natasha came to my class & announced that on 15th Feb,we will be winding up our MAD classes for this term.I was surprised.This past week i was thinking of preparing myself;i mean i knew what to teach,but didnt know how to prepare myself emotionally for it.
Anyway,my whole week passed with this weird feeling i can’t explain.Finally,the last day arrived.The class started with grammar doubts being cleared as their exams are starting next week.I had planned something special for them though……
I took pizza for them as they had always wanted to taste it,we had sweets,7up & i had special gifts for each of them.We were having our special feast & thats when i got a huge surprise.

PIZZA FEAST
My gals had made me a birthday card, & had got me flowers & a Munch.They sang for me.They wanted to be the first people to wish me for my birthday…..

Handmade card made 4 me by my angels

Nothing can beat this
I was really touched.One thing i know now is this year will be great for me & that i am truly blessed. ![]()

Cheers!!!!!

My angels
The kids had to leave in between for some religious custom;& so,the volunteers got together,shared 7up & reflected on the whole year,kids,& how we’re gonna miss them.
Few of the volunteers are gonna leave this year & thats going to be really sad
,i am gonna miss them.i had an amazing time with them this year;there were happy moments & yeah,moments when i even wanted to strangle some of them
(i am sure even they wanted to the same to me)but one thing is for sure,i wouldnt want to change anything i had with these kids & volunteers.

HG Gang(v really missed febin and resmi alot)

The chipko movement
The class ended with photo session,hugs,tears & byes.
I don’t know how i am gonna spend my Sundays anymore.It was something i always looked forward to.
Even though its only a few months with no class,thinking about it really doesn’t makes me happy. I am just hoping & praying hard i will be there to teach my gals in June…
The Last Day
Posted by Jr. in Volunteer Files... on February 15th, 2009
This Friday was our last class at YMCA…
Unlike every other time I’d gone there, I had no idea how to prepare for it… Preparation for that class had started a week earlier and I still had no idea what to do…
The kids had asked me once before, a really long time back, if I’d be around next year as well, and I had told them that in all probability I wouldn’t be.. I dint want to be asked that question again…
I got on Arjun’s bike and we set off for class.. As we were going, I remembered a day in May.. I was travelling on a Pulsar that day too… With Hijaz, on my way to my first Mad meeting… So much had changed since then…
The class itself was not like any other we had.. The kids were somehow more focused than on other days.. I had took a video to class.. A video that had influenced me a lot,Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in the Wall’, to see what they thought of it..
Amazingly enough, the very same kids who’d always joke around with everything, came up with some really good interpretations of the subject.. In fact, even after we’d moved on from the topic and I’d started off my usual yelling and screaming and making fun of everybody routine, they were still serious, and thinking about what they’d seen…
We then moved on to revising the comparing themes, and strangely enough, nobody complained about anything… A kid called Bipin always complains about everything as long as it has anything to do with learning.. Even he was smiling and trying to participate..
Last half hour, I told the kids they could do whatever they wanted… Some raced for the computers immediately.. But a couple came, sat by me and Arjun and generally talked about stuff…
I think Friday is the day that I realised that my kids weren’t kids anymore.. Somewhere down the line, they’d grown up… And for the past eight or so months, I’d been witness to that growth.. Yes, we had succeeded… We’d changed lives… Mine and theirs, both…
And while I was leaving, I was feeling really down… But not the kids.. They were going to miss classes just as much, but they kept staying stuff like, ‘I’ll see you at the Navy thing.’ and ‘I’ll drop by your place on my way home.’ and stuff like that.. Man, if I were that optimistic, I would’ve been so much better off…
It was a really good day, and an equally worse one at the time, coz we had to leave..
When we got out of the gates, Arjun had a really long face on him… He didn’t want to wait till next June to come to YMCA again.. And funny thing was, he’s going to be here for another two years.. And, in all probability I’m not going to be..
I’ll miss a lot of things.. I’ll miss laughing with the kids, the Ona Sadya, the Christmas and the One Eyed Santa all that.. I’ll miss ‘the Usuals’ near MEC.. The typing races, the ‘alphabet find’ games… All that !
A week ago, I gave the kids sheets of paper with every volunteers name on it, to write whatever they felt like about us.. To make us feel better, my level 2 kids had tried writing the entire thing in English.. And they only had good things to say about all of us… Until I see them next time, I’ll have to make do with the memories of the past year and those feedbacks, it seems…
It was a good year.. And I’m happy for that..
PS : I’m really bad at photoshop, so pardon me for the attempted collage that you see..

MAD Camp at Holy Ghost
Christmas is an occasion that is celebrated with one’s family. Celebrating Christmas with their family is one privilege which the children at the Holy Ghost do not have. Hence, it only made sense that MAD organized an event to make these girls feel right at home this Christmas.
The camp will be held on the 26th and 27th of December. Sessions on Dance, Arts, Music and Adventure will create an experience which will culture in the children a new zest for life and a confidence with which to face the world with renewed vigour. With the atmosphere that will be created, we hope to achieve the end of Woman Empowerment.
The girls at Holy Ghost come from very difficult and varied backgrounds, and hence there is a real need to make them aware of the possibilities that the World has to offer and to equip them to grab hold of them.
Empowering through education has always been MAD’s central motto, and we hope this camp of experiential learning will be the epitome of this very ideal.
Day 1
Day 1 will start with a course on the Art of Living, which is being conducted by Mr. Venkat Mani, who is the, coordinator of Art of Living Course.
Following which, respected journalist and social activist, first woman journalist from Kerala, Ms. Leela Menon will open the proceedings with a session on motivation and overcoming personal problems.
To help the girls speak more confidently and convincingly, Mr. Sooraj, a renowned trainer from ‘Career Dot Com’ will conduct a session on public speaking.
Two sessions on Dance and Body Movements will be taken by Ms. Radhika, who is a talented dancer trained at the prestigious Shiamak Dawar Institute of Performing Arts. The purpose of this session will be to remove the inhibitions that the children have of the stage, and of being in the lime light.
During the Adventure Session, events, which the children wouldn’t have dare to do before, such as Sky Walking, Monkey Gliding, Rope Walking, Reptile Act etc will be organized for the girls. While being an extremely fun event, it also promises to deliver the children from the shackles of the various phobias that they might have.
Day 2
Day 2 will kick off with Ms. Priyanka Idicula, from Magic Matchbox, who will conduct a session on Personal Care and Grooming to help build the girls’ confidence and to help empower them to present themselves better.
Yet another session will be based on the topic: ‘Self Expression through Art’; and will be conducted by Ms. Teresa Joseph George : the owner of Thought Factory Design, a graphic design company based in Cochin. This session has been envisioned to help the kids get in touch with themselves, and to make them proud of who they are and what they stand for.
To round it all off, we have established playback singer Ms. Renjini Jose coming in to have a fun music session with the kids.
The grand finale of the camp will be the arrival of Santa with presents for each and every child. Cake cutting and merriment will be embarked upon around the camp fire in full earnest.
The gala dinner will be courtesy The Avenue Regent, which pretty much assures one that the girls will get to dine like Queens at the Royal Table during the course of the camp.
Hoping to see you there.

The Journey so far
Posted by Feb in Volunteer Files... on December 23rd, 2008
3 years ago when I got recruited as a volunteer of MAD, Jithin asked me where I would like to be assigned. The was a variety of choices for me . Then he mentioned Holy Ghost, Aluva and how this convent was in immediate need of volunteers. Aluva , for many seemed like a galaxy far away, and most volunteers never go that far. Distance never stopped Rizwana and me. And thus we became part of Holy ghost.
In MAD, Holy Ghost always had to deal with many exceptional scenarios.
It’s a MAD rule that no intern take a class. Well, I’ve never been an intern!(and I long to be one).
My first day, I was asked to teach 20 highly spirited children. It was Hard, but as they say, Hard work always pays off. I enjoyed every single class I have taken from then. I remember the Saturday meeting when Jithin proudly announced that the volunteer: student ratio had come down to 1:10 in every orphanage and how my hand shot up in air. He responded by correcting the statement “ The volunteer student ratio is 1:10 except at Holy Ghost”.
Then there was also the fact the every orphanage had classes twice a week except Holy Ghost. Earlier I used to sit and complain about the unfairness showed to Holy Ghost. But now my outlook has changed. I learned to say “ So what if we only have class once a week .When I take a class it would be the best!”
As Mad grew, so did Holy Ghost. From a position where we were struggling to get volunteers or organizing a class to a place where we have 7 committed volunteers and 5 hi-tech classes. (Hi-tech because me n Rizwana use our laptops to teach the kids).
Holy ghost has finally made a mark in Mad and, we are having our first ever MAD camp this month! This journey was not so easy though.
Earlier we had the motive to give them a better a life by teaching them English. We didn’t knw how to teach them English. There were classes where I dint know what I was trying to accomplish. I have to thank the people responsible for bringing out the syllabus and the TTF trainings. Now I can sail smoothly through each class. And feel proud that I have achieved something .
During earlier days, getting to holy ghost was a struggle .You had to take 2buses- One to Aluva and one from Aluva to Paravoor ,and then a walk to the convent. I have seen volunteers complaining about the distance to Aluva.
This year ,thanks to my loving parents, I got a car . Now no one can complain about the distance. The car journey to and from Aluva became the volunteers special time to bond and discuss about how the class went. This is the time when Harsha get to irritate me and I retaliate by threating her to drop her in the middle of nowhere. ( which I havent done so far but cant wait to happen … hahaha!!!!! hehe..)
If anyone asks me what is that makes me keep going to Aluva every Sunday, the answer is the same as any other MAD volunteer .. it’s the children!
As time passes their love for us keeps growing and we get attached more and more.. In Holy Ghost. the girls notice everything little about us. They shower us with compliments when we look good. And we make it a point to look pleasant because it matters to them.
What’s most amazing about our children is their zest for knowledge. There are like magnets attracted to knowledge. The more you talk to them about the ways of the world, the merrier they are. I have had classes where I gave them information about coma, surgeries to debates on complexion being the basis of love. Every single one of them will always hold a special place in our hearts. They have taught me more than I have taught them. They taught me to hold my head high and smile through every adversity thrown by life.
What a great journey it had been . To put it shortly, as quoted by my fellow volunteers Harsha , Reshmi and Natasha “ In the beginning holy ghost was like a snow flake, then it became a snow ball and now its an Avalanche!!!”
