New Year at Sathya Ammaiyar

Come New Year, and the city folk find different excuses to go on a money-spending spree. The retail outlets – not ones to be left behind – bank on the opportunity and offer ‘special discounts/packages’ on their products. Be it clothes or parties, the public is under the illusion that they have got the best deal with their money. All for but one day.

Except us, who felt that it is only fair enough to share the excitement of an event which is celebrated in such pomp-and-glory all around the world, with our children. Thus, a day after the festivities died down elsewhere, M.A.D in partnership with Vivanta of Taj-Surya, organized lunch and games for the children of Satya Ammaiyar, Coimbatore.

It was on the afternoon of 2nd January, 2012 that on returning from school, the children were heartily welcomed with a decorated compound, a rich aroma in the air and volunteers of M.A.D and Vivanta eagerly awaiting them. After the sumptuous lunch, the children were entertained with songs and games. Apart from gifts given to every child, prizes were also given to the winners of each game. At the end, party hats and whistles were distributed, much to their delight.

The Vivanta team left after a while, though we stayed as the party wasn’t over yet! The air was a concoction of excited exchanges on opening the gifts, the joy of posing for photos and bursts of balloons, whistles and laughter. In the soft light of the evening sun, everyone’s face shone with bliss.

As I walked around the compound, taking in the moment, I noticed a lone boy, who had set his school bag aside, and was busy stuffing his lunch bag with the streamers used to decorate a nearby pole. At that very sight it occurred to me that, for these kids it wasn’t the pleasure of having a yummy lunch, but the chance to sit together with so many people, that made their day.

It wasn’t the value of the gift, but the suspense of opening a gift-wrapped object that excited them. Fancy phones don’t concern them; as long as they can pose their heart out for the photos. You don’t need ‘special offers’ to make these kids happy. All you need to do is let them be themselves, without a worry about tomorrow. If it’s so easy to brighten their day, then just imagine the impact that we can have on the lives of such children. And that is what we promise ourselves this New Year!
