MAD Nagpur recruits – first drive!
It was a glorious Sunday – the 16th of May for all Nagpurkars and it was going to become something really special for a lot of ‘MAD’ people at Nagpur, because it was the first recruitment drive of the season! Vankar Bhavan was the venue and on this particular Sunday, all roads lead to MAD!
Following two days of promotional activities all around Nagpur, the Nagpur core team had their fingers crossed; all eager to gauge the response from Orange City towards being MAD. And to our surprise, the first set of volunteers arrived dot at 4 pm! The registration papers were handed out to the first few volunteers who arrived with a lot of nervousness and excitement, wiping off sweat from their foreheads – partly because of the brutal Nagpur sun and partly because of the nervousness of being a part of MAD and wondering what was going to be hurled their way.
Within 20 minutes of the start time, 35 volunteers had arrived and were seated comfortably in the Vankar Bhavan hall, waiting for their first set of instructions. The recruitment drive was kicked off by Nagpur President Bhagyashree Barahate, who introduced the core team to the volunteers and then gave a presentation on MAD for the benefit of everyone present – which included the expectations from a volunteer, the teaching method, the overall structure of the MAD team at Nagpur and information about the existing centres.
The presentation had been made but there was still lots to come for everyone at the MAD drive. Soon after, we began with the ice-breakers. The 35 volunteers were divided into 3 groups and they were named lazy, unpunctual and bunkers – three undesirable qualities in potential MADdies.. and then they were asked to discuss about 10 attributes that they thought were essential in being a MADdie.. the response was great as each group came up with their unique attributes and qualities which they wished to see in a MAD volunteer.
After this activity, was the most fun part of the drive.
The volunteers were divided into groups again and they were given certain colours and emotions which they had to explain/get through to others. The twist was that the volunteers had to come in groups of twos and ‘teach’ the other volunteers in the room, like they were kids. It was a hilarious session as volunteers tried to explain colours like white and red and the volunteers/’kids’ in the room spared no chance to pull their leg. After each volunteer had tried his/her hand at ‘teaching’, he was given appropriate feedback on how his teaching efforts were, by existing volunteers and the core team.
Half an hour and lots of fun later, the Nagpur heat was getting to everyone. This problem was solved by chilled cold drinks served to all the volunteers. Soon afterwards, as the personal interviews began, the volunteers were served other refreshments as one by one, the others were called for their personal interviews. There were three panels for personal interviews and they were convened excellently – some interviewees getting hyper, some excited, some nervous and some – just right
The personal interviews and the influx of volunteers continued till 8 pm. And MAD Nagpur is proud to announce a total of 50 volunteers from the first recruitment drive. We are thankful to each and every Nagpurkar who came forward to support MAD and with such infectious enthusiasm about the same. The second recruitment drive promises to be equally fruitful. On the whole, MAD Nagpur is glad to have got some really amazing MADdies!
